Thyroid & Parathyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer and parathyroid cancer affect the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the neck, which make important hormones. Most tumors can be treated with radioactive iodine treatment or with surgery—thyroidectomy (thyroid removal) or parathyroidectomy (parathyroid removal). After thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy, you may have to take thyroid hormones in pill form for the rest of your life. Parathyroid cancer is less common than thyroid cancer.
