Suicide, Cutting & Self Injury

Cutting and self-injury aren’t typically suicide attempts. Rather, they are ways in which some people cope with negative emotions. People who are suicidal and those who engage in forms of self mutilation such as hair pulling (trichotillomania) and skin cutting can benefit from therapy and/or medication. Suicidal thoughts and depression often precede suicide attempts. If you are having suicidal thoughts or are concerned about someone you know, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
