STDs & Safe Sex

Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be cured if treated early, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and human papillomavirus (HPV). Left untreated, some may cause complications like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can lead to infertility. HPV is a risk factor for several types of cancer. Other STDs, like genital herpes and HIV, can be treated, but not cured, and can be transmitted to sexual partners. Safe sex can lessen the risk of transmission. Regular STD testing can detect an STD that may not produce symptoms.
