Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Transplants

Bone marrow is the spongy tissue in your bones that contains stem cells. A stem cell can develop into any cell in the body, including red or white blood cells or platelets. A bone marrow transplant (stem cell transplant) replaces bone marrow destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation used to treat cancer. Adult stem cells used for transplantation are taken from the patient before cancer treatment or from a bone marrow donor.
