Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, formerly called spastic colon) is a collection of symptoms that differs for each person. The most common IBS symptoms are abdominal cramping, stomach bloating and either chronic diarrhea or chronic constipation. But some people with IBS alternate between having diarrhea and being constipated. In short, for people with IBS, bowel problems are the norm. Diet and lifestyle changes can help (including an increase in dietary fiber) as can medications (e.g., antispasmodics, laxatives). Treatment for diarrhea and constipation not related to IBS varies depending on cause and severity.
