You can help reduce ulcerative colitis (UC) symptoms by making smart choices at home, including drinking plenty of water, getting emotional support, reducing stress, and paying close attention to your diet. A food diary may also help. You may find there are certain foods worth avoiding if they always end up causing pain, cramping or diarrhea.

What is ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes swelling and sores in the lining of your colon and rectum. It usually begins in your rectum and then spreads back into your colon. Symptoms of UC include:

  • Pain and cramping in your belly area
  • Frequent diarrhea, sometimes with blood
  • Nausea and vomiting (in severe cases)
  • Frequent urges to go
  • Bleeding from your rectum
  • Fatigue

You might also lose important fluids and nutrients due to rectal bleeding and diarrhea.

UC is typically treated with medications including anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids, biologics, and immune modifiers. You doctor might also recommend dietary supplements to make sure your body gets the nutrients you need.
