Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causes inflammation and swelling in the digestive tract. This leads to diarrhea, abdominal pain and problems obtaining nutrients from food. The most common types of IBD are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC). Crohn’s can spread throughout the digestive tract and to the bowels. Ulcerative colitis mainly affects the large intestine (colon). Treatment includes diet and drug therapy. Surgery may be necessary.
