Heart Valve Disease & Defects

Heart valves control the flow of blood between the four heart chambers. If a heart valve stiffens (valvular stenosis) or tears, blood can leak backwards—called valve regurgitation. The valves may also be closed from birth (atresia). Heart valve diseases are named for the valve affected (e.g., aortic stenosis, mitral valve regurgitation, pulmonary atresia). Valve disease can cause a heart murmur, but many heart murmurs are innocent. When valve problems require treatment, heart valve surgery or heart valve replacement may correct problems.
