Gingivitis & Gum Disease (Periodontal)

Gum health is a key factor in preventing tooth loss. The first stage of gum disease (periodontal disease) is gingivitis, often indicated by bleeding gums. Gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, a serious gum infection than destroys gums and bone. Swollen gums, sore gums and bleeding gums should be checked by a dentist. Receding gums can be cause by overly vigorous brushing or gum disease. Gum disease may be a sign of a more serious body-wide illness.
