Nine do’s and don’ts for getting the most out of face time with your doctor.

1) Time is ticking!
You don’t have much face time, so don’t be late. We know, we know … you’re thinking, “Why? My doc is always running behind.” But how do you think that starts? Hmm …
2) Be prepared.
Have the answers to these questions at the ready: What is your family medical history? What medicines or supplements do you take? What allergies do you have? Make lists and keep them up-to-date. (You might want to keep a list of previous treatments, too.)
3) This is not a confession.
Only share personal details that impact your health. Seek all relationship and other life advice elsewhere!
4) Prioritize.
Remember #1. Keep your list to two or three of your top concerns. If you want to talk about your health in general, say that when you’re making your appointment. The office staff can then schedule you a longer appointment time.
5) Be honest.
Lying gets you nowhere. Not taking your medicine? Ignoring your lifestyle plan? Your doctor can suggest additional support or other options that might fit your life better, but only if you tell the truth. So ‘fess up. (But not about everything, see #3.)
6) Bring a pal.
Okay, maybe you can’t have your own personal nurse, but you can bring someone to help you take notes. (Keep unruly pets and children at home.)
7) Mirror, mirror... what the doctor said.
To be sure you understand what the doctor wants you to do, try repeating back his instructions. This helps you both know you’re on the same page.
8) Ditch the phone.
Keep your focus on the communication at hand.
9) Know your next step.
Before you leave, be sure you know your immediate and long-term next steps. Immediate steps might be scheduling a follow-up before you leave or filling a prescription. Long-term steps include lifestyle and medicine instructions to help you reach your health goals.
