Not all cholesterol is bad. HDL is called "good cholesterol," because it helps keep "bad" LDL cholesterol from building up in your arteries. High levels of HDL (60 or above) can help protect you from heart attack and stroke.

You can raise your HDL levels by:

  • Eating a balanced diet.
  • Getting active.
  • Losing weight.
  • Quitting smoking.
  • Taking certain medicines.
