Child Care: Interviewing Care Providers

Topic Overview

During an interview with a potential child care provider, ask open-ended questions, such as:

  • How would you describe yourself?
  • What ages of children have you cared for?
  • How often do you think a toddler should go outside to play?
  • What are your favorite children's books? How often do you think you should read to a child?
  • What would you do if my child fell and cut himself or herself, passed out, or had a seizure?
  • Are you willing to watch my child when he or she is sick or injured?

Ask specific questions about caring for a child in your child's age group, such as:

  • How do you handle a crying 6-month-old baby?
  • What kind of games would you play with a 9-month-old?
  • How would you discipline a 4-year-old who is talking back?
  • Would you be willing to help my child with his or her homework?

Have your child present for at least part of your interview with a potential individual care provider. Watch how the provider interacts with your child.

Ask the provider about his or her educational background, including training in child care. Ask specifically whether he or she is trained to prevent choking and certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
