Peer Pressure
Peers are kids your age, like your classmates or friends. When your peers try to get you to do something, or try to influence you, this is called peer pressure. Peer pressure can be positive or negative. Positive peer pressure might be when someone encourages you to do something good, like study or volunteer. If your friends are trying to get you to drink alcohol, do drugs, or smoke cigarettes, this is negative peer pressure.
Peer pressure can be tough to deal with because you might want to fit in, or you might be afraid that other kids will make fun of you. But it’s okay to say no. Your parents can help you make plans for certain situations when you might be pressured, so you can have a response ready.
Here are some tips to help you deal with peer pressure in the moment:
- Stand up straight, and make eye contact.
- Say how you feel, and don’t make excuses.
- Stick up for yourself.
It can be hard to say “no” to peer pressure, but you can do it. It just takes practice. One way you can avoid peer pressure is by choosing friends who aren’t going to pressure you to do things like smoke and drink. You can also walk away from situations where kids are drinking or doing drugs.
