Childhood Growth & Development

Childhood development is measured by milestones that children generally reach by certain ages. Issues such as biting, teething, weaning, toilet training, temper tantrums and thumb sucking all pertain to a child's development. Keeping track of your child's development makes it easier to detect potential problems early, when they may be easier to correct. The American Academy of Pediatrics defines the following child development stages: infant development (prenatal to 1 year), early childhood development (1 to 4 years), middle childhood development (5 to 10 years) and adolescent development (11 to 21 years).
