Women with BRCA gene mutations have a higher breast cancer risk. Symptoms can be subtle or nonexistent. Breast cancer awareness (regular monthly breast self-exam, annual physician exams and mammograms) and early breast cancer treatment can decrease risk and stop cancer spread. Treatment depends on the breast cancer stage. Mastectomy or lumpectomy may be needed for diagnosis or treatment, and breast reconstruction may be necessary. Inflammatory breast cancer and male breast cancer are less common.
