Birth Control (Contraception)

Temporary birth control (contraception) takes two forms. Condoms, diaphragms and intrauterine devices (IUDs) work by blocking sperm (creating a barrier). Birth control pills (the pill, the mini pill, oral contraceptives) work by controlling hormones. More-permanent birth control methods include tubal ligation and vasectomy—although reversal of both may be possible. The condom is the only contraceptive that also protects against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). “After the fact” emergency contraception (the morning after pill) can also prevent unwanted pregnancy.
