What is ADHD?
ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In a child with ADHD, the parts of the brain that control activity and attention work differently. This is because there is an imbalance in the amounts of certain neurotransmitters—chemicals that send signals from one nerve cell to another. Without the right amount of neurotransmitters, areas of the brain that control activity and attention don’t work like they should. This can make school and home activities challenging.
The good news is that proper treatment can improve your child’s symptoms and reduce the impact ADHD can have in your child’s life. To be effective, ADHD treatment needs to be consistent and well-managed.
